HISTORY OF TAMPA

Tampa is a city located on the west coast of Florida, in the United States. The area that is now Tampa was originally inhabited by various indigenous peoples for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived in Florida, and in the 18th century, the area that is now Tampa was part of the Spanish Empire.

 

In 1849, the first post office was established in Tampa, and in 1855, the city was incorporated. During the Civil War, Tampa served as an important supply port for the Confederacy.

 

After the Civil War, Tampa continued to grow, with the development of the cigar industry. Thousands of Cuban immigrants came to Tampa to work in the cigar factories, and the city became known as the “Cigar Capital of the World”. By the early 20th century, Tampa was the largest cigar-producing city in the world.

During the 20th century, Tampa continued to grow and diversify its economy. In 1971, the first phase of the Tampa International Airport was completed, which helped to increase tourism to the area.
